From Burned Out to Building Income: A Nurse’s Real Recovery Plan
I used to lie in bed after my shift with my legs cramping, my mind foggy, and my heart feeling completely drained. I was exhausted, in debt, and feeling like my life was on pause while I helped everyone else move forward.
Burnout wasn’t just emotional — it showed up in my body, my finances, and my relationships. No planner or protein shake could fix what I was carrying.
And I know I’m not the only nurse who feels this way.
What Burnout Really Looked Like for Me
It wasn’t just being “tired.”
It was:
Feeling numb after 12-hour shifts Losing sleep even on my days off Seeing my bank account drop after paying off one bill — only for another to pop up Trying to be strong for my patients, my family, and my team… while silently falling apart
I knew I couldn’t keep going like that. I was showing up for everyone — except myself.
My First Step Toward Change
It didn’t happen overnight, but here’s what started my glow-up:
I created a bucket list of what I actually wanted in life I started listening to financial blogs and nurse wellness podcasts I picked up extra shifts with intention — to fund my freedom And I started building something small but meaningful: A burnout recovery workbook — for myself and other nurses like me
I made it in Canva. I uploaded it to Gumroad. And for the first time, I felt like I wasn’t just surviving — I was starting to take control.
What’s Helping Me Now (and Could Help You Too)
Here’s what’s made the biggest difference so far:
Tracking my income and goals on paper Getting clear about my debt and facing it with a plan Selling my workbook (yes, I actually made income from it!) Starting this blog to document and inspire other nurses on this journey Knowing that even a small shift can lead to a massive change
